Our 12-bed facility is staffed by a committed team of doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants who focus on relieving cancer-related symptoms, administering medication, and providing meals—all to ensure comfort and dignity. While we do not offer curative treatment, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life for our patients, offering them peace and support in their final journey.
Our services are offered free of charge to terminally ill cancer patients who have exhausted all medical options and have a life expectancy of six months or less. Understanding that medicine is not an exact science, we welcome all who need our care, ensuring they receive the compassion and support they deserve.
As a Not-for-Profit Organization with Charitable Status granted by the Ministry of Finance, Trinidad and Tobago, in February 2017, we remain committed to serving those in need. Through dedication and service, we provide a place of peace, dignity, and compassionate care for individuals and their families navigating life’s most challenging moments.
Dr. George Laquis’s dream became a reality with the establishment of Vitas House Hospice. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, author of the seminal book On Death and Dying, and Cicely Saunders, a pioneering British nurse who founded the modern hospice movement, Dr. Laquis sought to provide compassionate care for the terminally ill in Trinidad and Tobago.
Vitas House Hospice, a sanctuary for terminally ill cancer patients, is located within the St. James Medical Complex. Founded in 2008 by The Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society (TTCS) with North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) support, our hospice has become a beacon of hope and care.
Since our dedication on October 18th, 2008, and the admission of our first patient on February 11th, 2009, we have cared for 933 patients. We are one of only two institutions in Trinidad and Tobago providing hospice care to cancer patients who can no longer care for themselves or whose families are unable to provide the necessary support.

Our compassionate staff offers emotional and spiritual support, providing a comforting presence and a listening ear to patients and their families.

Our experienced healthcare professionals deliver exceptional medical attention, focusing on each patient's specific needs.

We prioritize comfort and well-being with advanced pain management techniques to alleviate discomfort and enhance the quality of life.
Donating to Vitas House Hospice is an invaluable way to support the care and comfort of terminally ill cancer patients. Every contribution, regardless of size, directly enhances the quality of life for our patients by funding essential medical supplies, medications, meals, and holistic care services. Your generosity enables us to provide a compassionate, dignified environment where patients receive round-the-clock attention and support. By donating, you are helping us sustain and expand our mission to offer free, accessible hospice care, ensuring that each patient spends their final days with the utmost respect, comfort, and peace.

Volunteering at Vitas House Hospice and as a Candy Striper offers an enriching experience, providing individuals with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of terminally ill cancer patients. As part of the compassionate care team at Vitas House Hospice, volunteers offer emotional support, companionship, and practical assistance to patients in their final stages of life, ensuring they receive the comfort, dignity, and respect they deserve. In addition, through the Candy Striper program, volunteers contribute to various tasks that enhance patient care and the overall environment of the hospice. These roles not only improve the quality of life for those in need but also allow volunteers to bring hope and kindness to the lives of the most vulnerable.
It is with deep gratitude and humility that I extend this message to you.
Vitas House is more than just a facility; it embodies a dream rooted in compassion and dedication to human dignity. Inspired by the remarkable work of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and Cicely Saunders, two pioneers who revolutionized the care of the terminally ill, I envisioned a place where individuals could spend their final days in peace, surrounded by care, understanding, and love.
Here at Vitas House, we are committed to providing not just medical care, but, holistic support that honors the emotional, spiritual, and psychological needs of each patient and their families. It has always been our mission to ensure that every person who comes through our doors receives the highest standard of care, grounded in empathy and respect.
I believe in the profound impact of compassionate care, and I hope that Vitas House Hospice will be a sanctuary where those in their final chapter of life can find comfort and solace. Your presence here today is a testament to the shared belief in the value of this mission, and I am deeply grateful for your support.
Thank you for being a part of this journey. Together, we can continue to uphold the vision of compassionate care for all who need it.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Dr. George Laquis
