Enhancing Life with Comfort and Dignity to Terminally Ill Cancer Patients.

At Vitas House Hospice, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life and dignifying the terminal stages of cancer through compassionate, 24-hour palliative care, providing specialized support and service to those in need.

Our 12-bed facility is staffed by a committed team of doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants who focus on relieving cancer-related symptoms, administering medication, and providing meals—all to ensure comfort and dignity. While we do not offer curative treatment, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life for our patients, offering them peace and support in their final journey.

Our services are offered
free of charge to terminally ill cancer patients who have exhausted all medical options and have a life expectancy of six months or less. Understanding that medicine is not an exact science, we welcome all who need our care, ensuring they receive the compassion and support they deserve.
As a Not-for-Profit Organization with Charitable Status granted by the Ministry of Finance, Trinidad and Tobago, in February 2017, we remain committed to serving those in need. Through dedication and service, we provide a place of peace, dignity, and compassionate care for individuals and their families navigating life’s most challenging moments.

A Legacy of Compassionate Care

Dr. George Laquis’s dream became a reality with the establishment of Vitas House Hospice. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, author of the seminal book On Death and Dying, and Cicely Saunders, a pioneering British nurse who founded the modern hospice movement, Dr. Laquis sought to provide compassionate care for the terminally ill in Trinidad and Tobago.

Our History

Vitas House Hospice, a sanctuary for terminally ill cancer patients, is located within the St. James Medical Complex. Founded in 2008 by The Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society (TTCS) with North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) support, our hospice has become a beacon of hope and care.

Since our dedication on October 18th, 2008, and the admission of our first patient on February 11th, 2009, we have cared for 933 patients. We are one of only two institutions in Trinidad and Tobago providing hospice care to cancer patients who can no longer care for themselves or whose families are unable to provide the necessary support.

Candy Striper

Volunteer Program

Volunteering at Vitas House Hospice and as a Candy Striper offers an enriching experience, providing individuals with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of terminally ill cancer patients. As part of the compassionate care team at Vitas House Hospice, volunteers offer emotional support, companionship, and practical assistance to patients in their final stages of life, ensuring they receive the comfort, dignity, and respect they deserve. In addition, through the Candy Striper program, volunteers contribute to various tasks that enhance patient care and the overall environment of the hospice. These roles not only improve the quality of life for those in need but also allow volunteers to bring hope and kindness to the lives of the most vulnerable.

Testimonials

My name is Dillon Girod, son of James Girod, who recently entered hospice care at Vitas House. In the last few months, caring for my dad became a full-time responsibility as he was unable to care for himself. After visiting Vitas House, I was impressed by the accommodating staff and the clear admission process. He was approved for care the same day, and the 24/7 attention he received put our family at ease. Sadly, my dad passed away three weeks later, but he expressed his gratitude for being there, especially since the service was provided at no cost. The compassionate care of the staff brought him peace, and my sisters and I were able to be with him during his final moments, which was deeply meaningful to us.

Vitas House provided exceptional care for my loved one during a challenging time, and I’m incredibly grateful for their compassion. The staff went above and beyond, treating my family and me with kindness and respect, as if we were part of their own. It gave me great comfort knowing my mom was in the best possible hands, receiving specialized care. Had I known about Vitas House last year, my late sister would have also benefitted from their care. The professionalism and attentiveness of the staff made a significant difference during such a difficult period, and their dedication will never be forgotten. I highly recommend Vitas House to anyone who needs specialized and compassionate care for their loved ones.
